Yorkshire Terrier Puppy

A Yorkshire Terrier puppy is born completely black with tan markings on his face and legs making the final selection of a puppy a difficult task. When choosing a puppy as a pet, temperament and soundness are all important. Select a puppy with a cheerful and fearless disposition which does not crawl away from the approach of strangers. The puppy should have bright eyes that are free from discharge and a firm little body - plump but not bloated. The smallest puppy from the litter is not a good choice, especially if he will be a companion to children. A puppy is usually is easier to train than an adult dog.

Where to Get a Yorkshire Terrier Puppy

You can choose among several places to buy your Yorkie. One is a kennel breeding show-quality dogs but who also may have extra puppies for sale as pets. Another is a one-dog owner who has occasional litters. Pet shops usually buy puppies for re-sale from overstocked kennels or part-time hobbyists. Whichever source you choose, you can usually tell if the puppies will make healthy pets. If they are clean, plump and lively, they are probably in good health. The mother, having just raised a family, may not look her best, but if she is sturdy and friendly, puppies should be too.

Should You Buy a Pet or Show Quality Yorkshire Terrier?

Conscientious breeders strive to maintain and improve the breed standard. The dogs that come close the the ideal dog that is generally described in the breed standard are usually selected as show stock; those that do not are sold as pets. However, the pet-quality purebred dogs are not less healthy or attractive than show-quality dogs.

If your Yorkshire Terrier puppy is strictly to be a pet for the children, or a companion for you, do not buy a show dog and look for a bargain. A pet-quality Yorkshire Terrier puppy is much less expensive.

Which Is Better - Male or Female Yorkshire Terrier Puppy?

If you plan to breed, buy a female. A female is smaller than a male and usually is quieter, but a properly trained male Yorkshire Terrier is more playful. All things considered, it is a matter of personal choice - both make charming companions.

What You Should Look For in a Yorkshire Terrier Puppy

Look for one that is friendly and outgoing. The biggest puppy in the litter can grow into a somewhat coarse looking dog, but the smallest can become too timid. The breeder will supply you with feeding and grooming instructions and papers. There is some confusion among inexperienced dog owners regarding pedigree papers and registration papers. A pedigree is a statement on a special blank that shows the names of several generations from which your new Yorkshire Terrier puppy comes, and some other data, including the name of the breeder. Registration papers from the American Kennel Club or any other local club register the fact that your puppy's parents are purebred dogs and they were registered with a particular club.

Pedigrees and registration have nothing to do with licensing. You should buy a license from local authorities and keep it on your dog's collar for identification.
